Healthcare

  • Universal healthcare system primarily funded through taxes

    • Covers 100% of the population​

  • Covers primary care, hospital care, ambulances, mental health, preventative services, rehabilitation, maternity care, palliative care, and a few prescription medications

  • Patients may make out-of-pocket contributions, but there are limits

  • Municipalities are responsible for primary care and the national government is responsible for specialized care

  • People may choose to have private insurance to reduce wait time and broaden choice of providers, but only about 10% of the population has private insurance

  • The universal system covers about 85% of all healthcare costs

  • Everyone is guaranteed medical care

  • There may be out-of-pocket payments, but these are limited (approximately $250 USD per year)

  • Service costs:

    • Primary care: $19-20 USD​

    • Specialized consultation: $30-45 USD

    • Hospitalization: None

    • Prescription medication: Up to $65 USD for 3 months

    • Ambulance: None

    • Childbirth: may be some associated fees, but largely free of charge

Health Outcomes

  • Norway has an average life expectancy of 82.9 years, compared to the US life expectancy of 77.4 years

  • The leading causes of death in Norway are Alzheimer's and other dementias, ischemic heart disease, COPD, stroke, and lung cancers

  • Maternal mortality rate of 2.16 per 100,000 live births and a neonatal mortality rate of 1.32 per 1,000 live births

  • Mortality due to air pollution is 7.9 per 100,000 people

  • Health outcomes are expected to continue to improve in the number of people who have better health and wellbeing, reduced financial hardship due to healthcare, and protection from health emergencies
