First Year - HLSC-H 100: Learning Community Seminar Health Sciences

First Semester Reflection:

Learning Strategy Project Reflection:

Second Year - HLSC-H 362: Legal and Regulatory Aspects in Rehabilitation

Health-Related Agency Report:

Reflection:

The paper to the left was developed about a health-related agency, detailing the regulatory aspects of home-based food vendors. This project allowed me to gain an insight on the workings of health-related agencies while staying up-to-date on such topics.

Third Year - HLSC-H 365: DIVERSITY ISSUES IN HEALTH AND REHABILITATION

My Culture with Adobe Express

Reflection:

The goal of this assignment was to explore my own personal cultural identity in a class designed to explore culture through a healthcare perspective. This allowed me to put words to my own cultural identity while better understanding the perspectives of others.

Fourth Year - HLSC-H 440: Medical & Psychological Aspects of Disability

Ignite Presentation

Reflection:

Through this assignment, I was able to broaden my knowledge on traumatic brain injuries, a common injury that I may work with a lot as a healthcare professional. While I focused specifically on TBI-related speech and language impairments, it is important for me to understand all impacts of traumatic brain injuries. This includes the psychosocial aspects of living with a TBI. Personally, this aspect of the project was the most interesting for me to research. I enjoyed looking into extensive methods of improving quality of life for those with TBIs, including the AAC devices for those with TBI-related speech disorders.

Fourth Year - HLSC-H 442: RESEARCH IN HEALTH AND REHABILITATION SCIENCES

Reflection:

Throughout this course, I have gained skills that will allow me to successfully contribute to research within the field of Health Sciences. These skills include, but are not limited to:

  • Considering what type of data collection, population sampling, and analysis methods are appropriate to use for the overarching research topic

  • How to compile collected research into an organized paper including an introduction, methods, results, and discussion

  • How to properly cite sources when referencing other research papers

  • How to read and analyze current research papers to understand the type of design and analysis methods

I have also gained more knowledge about the different types of research. Some examples include correlational, qualitative,  experimental, and a case-control study. It is important to note that the study design should be appropriate for the overarching research question.

In addition to this, I learned more about Type 1 (false positive) and Type 2 errors (false negative).

I also learned about the elements that make up a well-designed research paper, and what each element should include. This aides in both my reading and writing of a research article.

Lastly, the course offers several strategies for successful writing, including outlining and establishing a routine.

Germany Virtual Exchange

The Health Sciences department hosts a yearly virtual exchange program with a school in Germany for students to develop cultural understanding and connect with students from another country. During my second and third year, I have acted as a mentor during the virtual exchange to help facilitate conversation between the groups of students.
