Costa Rica: Honors College Service Learning
I participated in the Honors College Service Learning program based in Uvita, Costa Rica in the spring of 2023. The focus of the program was on the sustainability and culture of the country, with a specific emphasis on the 17 sustainable development goals. During the program, we created signs to promote the protection of local wildlife and plants. We also had the opportunity to visit sites such as Corcovado National Park. We spoke with many of the locals, learning more about the sustainability and culture of Costa Rica. This included lectures on marine life, lectures on sustainability, cooking classes, and dancing classes. After the program, we developed visuals on the importance of the SDGs and how to apply them to the United States.
UK: Health Systems Around the World
In the spring of 2024, I participated in a study abroad program based in London, United Kingdom in order to learn more about the healthcare system of the United Kingdom. The program was through IUI's Fairbanks School of Public Health, so the program had a specific emphasis on public health and disease prevention. We had many lectures given by former and current physicians in London, tours about the history of disease in London, and an interesting lecture from someone with experience with both U.S. and U.K. health systems. During the program, we visited many health-related buildings and went to sites such as the British Museum, the Old Operating Theatre, Natural History Museum, the Welcome Collection, and the Gordon Museum.
